The Climate Gap Report 2024

Ethical Consumer Research Association (ECRA) have released Closing the Climate Gap 2024 – their annual report on progress towards sustainable consumer lifestyles in the UK.

Sadly they offer no prizes for correctly guessing that we are not on track to meet international emissions reduction targets, but as well as highlighting the gap between where we are and where we need to be they do reveal the actions that must be taken to address it.

Six Key Findings from the Report

  1. Against all odds, some progress is being made.
  2. The targets need a proper sense check as governments are urged to move to ‘emergency mode’.
  3. Poor data quality in this area is of increasing concern.
  4. The change of UK government looks promising.
  5. Political action remains important.
  6. Wider political reform is still required.

The report finds that across the four key consumer areas of consumer goods, food, heating and transport we are not cutting emissions fast enough.

Five of the highest carbon saving personal climate actions we can take

  1. Reduce long haul flights
  2. Reduce animal products in diet
  3. Install a heat pump
  4. Switch from a conventional to an electric vehicle
  5. Install solar panels
