A report by UK thinktank The Economics Foundation has found that we could raise £54bn per year by simply introducing a frequent flyer levy across Europe.
An added perk, it suggests, would be that such a levy could bring down demand for air travel by 21%.
Given that a 2020 study found that only 1% of us account for more than half of the CO2 emissions from passenger air travel, such a levy would only impact one in a hundred of the population anyway.
What’s more the proposed frequent flyer levy would give every person one return flight per year untaxed, with every flight taken per person per year thereon coming with an increase in tax.
With the first return flight being untaxed, 72% of Europe’s flyers would remain unaffected anyway!
Seems like an absolute no-brainer to me!
Magdalena Heuwieser, an aviation campaigner at campaign group Stay Grounded who helped compile the report said, “Right now, it doesn’t matter whether you’re flying to visit your family for the first time in years, or taking a tenth annual flight to your luxury house on the coast, you’ll be paying the same tax for that flight,”
“A frequent flying levy would be a fair aviation measure, reducing excessive flights for wealthy passengers, while raising revenues … to expand and provide affordable railways and public transport.”
