Labour Government Blindly Led by Fossil Fuel Interests

It’s less than six months since they won power and the Labour party have already scrapped their campaign commitment to provide an annual stimulus of £28 billion for green industries.

Instead they’ve committed £22 billion over 25 years towards the proven myth of carbon capture and storage, giving existing oil companies the right to pump vast swathes of carbon dioxide under the North Sea. -Nothing terrifying sounding for future generations about a bubbling sea of gas under the actual sea! 😬 🌊

Mark Maslin, professor of natural sciences at UCL, says that this, “represents a massive bet on a still unproven technology, and will lock the UK into fossil fuel dependence for decades to come”.

With the recent study debunking the myth of carbon capture as a means of negating the impacts of climate change, Maslin says that it should only be used to reduce emissions from existing power plants whilst we rapidly phase out these sources of emissions.

  1. @betterworld In the text that you link to, published by the conversation, there is a mix up between carbon capture and injection for the purpose of increasing oil production and carbon capture and storage.. to keep it away from the atmospheric carbon cycle for a long long time. Mixing of both objectives into the statistics to evaluate CCS is a misleading. The concluding characterization of the state of the technology is wrong: CO2 _can_ be stored underground, and that is proven technology.

    1. Hi thomas,
If you have any links to research and evidence on that I’d be interested to read more. From what I’ve heard up to now, mainly through Dale Vince it is neither proven nor known to be safe, as well as being an excuse to keep burning fossil fuels.
      Cheers,
      Sam
