A Brief History
In 1994 mother and nurse, Charlotte, wanted to help remedy the skin allergies and eczema that her daughter was badly suffering from. Charlotte was extremely motivated to be her own boss and start something new and inspiring that could help people in similar situations. Through a lot of hard work and determination Green People was founded in 1997 and from the very beginning Charlotte was committed to her principles of ethical practice. Charlotte promised from the start to never use aggressive ingredients or synthetic fragrances and colourants in the products she produced.
In 1999 Charlotte was determined to introduce regulation within the natural cosmetics market. Prior to 1999 a product only needed 1% of natural ingredients to be called ‘natural’ and Charlotte approached the Soil Association to campaign for organic health and beauty products to have strict standards. In 1999 a committee was formed with Charlotte playing a central role and the first standards for organic beauty products were created. Charlotte and Green People’s Cosmetic Scientist Ian Taylor have continued to play an important role in determining the natural and organic cosmetic standards that are available today. Today Green People offer over 100 award-winning, certified organic products for everyone, including specialist skin conditions.
Organic Certifications
Green People were one of the pioneering companies to have their products certified as organic by the Soil Association in 2002, the Organic Food Federation in 2003 and certification with EcoCert in 2009. Green People is therefore the only cosmetics company to be independently certified by three certification bodies. All of these bodies have very strict rules on the type of ingredients that are allowed to be used within their products. The ingredients have to be submitted for approval at each of the bodies and annual inspections are carried out to oversee manufacturing and packaging methods. Each certification body requires full transparency over every ingredient, which means it is possible to trace the raw materials right back to the farmer and piece of land from which the ingredients came. The entire range of skincare products are vegetarian-friendly and over 100 of the products are suitable for vegans. Almost 90% of the products are certified by one or more of the certification bodies and the remaining products are made in line with the same standards. Green People are working hard to certify all of their products as organic in the future.
Work with Charities
Green People works in partnership with the Marine Conservation Society (MSC), a UK charity for the protection of our seas, shores and wildlife. In order to raise awareness of MSC Green People donate 30p from the sale of all their marine-friendly organic sun lotion products to MSC. Green People decided to support MSC as a result of research finding that the chemicals in normal sun protection had a detrimental effect on marine wildlife.
Conclusion
Green People provide a perfect example of how cosmetics can be both sensitive to the environment and great value for money. By working in collaboration with charities and taking an active role in social media Green People provide a strong environmental message and transparency of service. They are a breath of fresh air in an otherwise pseudo-scientific cosmetic market. If you’re conscious about the environment as well as your skin then start buying your health and beauty products from Green People today!
