Dam, That’s Cool
Removing river barriers no longer in use (which often entail safety issues when left unmaintained) can have positive effects on climate change.
Last year a record 603 dams were removed across Europe, reconnecting 2300 miles of waterways, according to Dam Removal Europe. In total they’ve overseen almost 10,000 barriers removed across the region.
All wins for nature, Sweden removed the most (173) in 2025, followed by Finland (143) and Spain (109). Meanwhile Iceland and Macedonia made their river-barrier-removal debuts!
Biodiversity gains have already been reported from last year’s dam removals.
