Amazon Black Friday Corporation Tax Avoidance
Ethical Consumer Research Association (ECRA) have calculated that Amazon’s systematic corporation tax avoidance in 2024 could have cost UK citizens around £575 million in lost taxes.
🏥 Measured in nurses that’s 23,504 starting salaries that could have been paid for in the year.
👩⚕️ Measured in doctors that’s 14,808 lost doctors in the NHS.
👨🏫 Measured in teachers that’s 17,012 extra teachers we could have had.
Other measurements show the money lost via Amazon’s tax avoidance in 2024 could have paid for 2 million winter fuel payments, or nearly half a million weeks of adult residential nursing care, or 3256 new social homes.
Not only do we have to endure the direct negative impact on our public services due to Amazon’s behaviour, but they’re also pushing out other UK retailers who were paying their fair share of tax, losing even more there.
Yeah, but BLACK FRIDAY!
I know what you’re saying: You love the idea of Black Friday. It’s a chance to save some money when finances are squeezed and who doesn’t love a bargain? … but Which found that Black Friday deals are not always be as good as they seem, with 98% of discounts advertised on Black Friday being available for the same price or cheaper in the six months following the sales.
