Net Zero Possible with Brave Decisions

The Climate Change Committee (UK government’s advisory panel) revealed to parliament last week that 2024 emissions were down by almost 50% to the levels from 1990, putting the country on course to meet their target of a 68% cut by 2030.

The main driver has been the swap of fossil fuels for renewables in our electricity system, with further gains expected to come as we swap petrol and diesel vehicles for EVs.

Progress in peatland restoration was also revealed while tree planting hit a two-decade high, although both are falling short of required targets.

The report stated that, ‘until the world reaches Net Zero CO2 emissions, with deep reductions in other greenhouse gases, global temperatures will continue to rise.’ It said, ‘The Government has made no clear progress on removing policy costs for electricity’, and that, ‘making electricity cheaper remains our first recommendation’.

CCC chair Piers Forster said, “The government needs to do more to ensure people see the benefits of climate action in their bills. Given increasingly unstable geopolitics, it is also important to get off unreliable fossil fuels and onto homegrown, renewable energy as quickly as possible. The fossil fuel era is over – cheap, clean electricity is our future.”
